Mindfulness for athletes
My approach to mindfulness is to include all aspects of life in practice. As a USA Cycling Category 1 racer, I’ve always approached racing and training as part of my path. The body and mind are two parts of a system, each exerting influence on the other. To be a successful racer requires mental discipline, focus, and the ability to see clearly when the body and mind are under stress. Training and exercise also have an important holistic impact on the mind. Mindfulness supports stress reduction, improves focus and decision making, and heightens emotional well-being. It can also result in a greater understanding of when we turn away from pain, and yield a higher pain threshold. Mindfulness practice carries a wide variety of other health benefits, making the incorporation of meditation into your training plan an easy way to improve your enjoyment of sport and understanding of the body and mind.
